WhatsApp beta update introduces chat themes for select Android users

WhatsApp is introducing a new feature through its latest update, available via the Google Play Beta Program, which brings the app's version to 2.24.21.34.

The update allows a select group of Android beta testers to experiment with chat themes, giving users the option to personalize their messaging experience by choosing from 20 different colours.

Initially rolled out for iOS users, the feature is now extending to Android devices. Users can set a default theme for all chats or customize individual conversations. The update offers flexibility, letting users apply different themes for personal, work, or group chats, making it easier to visually distinguish between conversations.

While the themes affect the colour of messages, WhatsApp also allows further customization by choosing separate wallpapers. However, these changes are private—only the user will see the updated themes, while the recipient’s chat will remain unchanged.

The feature is currently available to a limited number of beta testers to gather feedback and ensure stability. If the feature isn’t accessible yet, more users will gain access as the rollout continues in the coming weeks.

WhatsApp’s phased rollout ensures performance can be monitored and any bugs addressed before the feature becomes widely available.
